The use of asbestos on United States ships increased dramatically during and in the years following World War II. Hundreds of thousands of military personnel and civilian shipyard workers were exposed to products and materials containing asbestos.
Personnel most commonly exposed include, but are not limited to the following:
- Boilermen
- Enginemen
- Firemen
- Machine Mates
- Shipfitters and Pipefitters
- Electricians and Electrician mates
- Seabees
- Civilian Shipyard Workers
- Refractory Workers
- Insulators
